NEW CASTLE, Pa. — A firefighter was dragged to safety when a wall and ceiling collapsed during a fire at a former bar in Pa. Sunday night.
The fire broke out in New Castle at about 8 p.m, drawing a crowd of spectators.
Lt. John Onufrak Sr. was inside the burning structure, when a wall and ceiling collapsed on him, according to the New Castle News.
Two police officers raced into the building to assist firefighters in pulling Lt. Onufrak Sr. to safety.
As the firefighter emerged onto the street, the crowd of onlookers cheered. One can be heard saying, “They got him out. That’s some real hero stuff happening.”
Lt. Onufrak Sr. was conscious and talking to paramedics when he was pulled, and then taken on a stretcher to an ambulance and transported to Jameson Hospital, according to the article.
The building formerly housed the Black Whale, a bar that had been closed since the 1970s.
The fire engulfed the second floor and flames were leaping out of the east side of the building, threatening to collapse and spread to the neighboring Butz Flowers building, the article said.
