WASHINGTON — A new video released by the International Society of Fire Service Instructors and the UL Fire Service Research Institute aims to educate firefighters on how to battle basement blazes.

In the video, District of Columbia Fire Department Battalion Chief Tony Carroll, who is also an ISFSI Instructor, guides viewers through key points and tactical considerations from the Understanding and Fighting Basement Fires Project by the ISFSI and UL FSRI.

The study was meant to figure out how to reduce the high risk basement fires pose to firefighters due to high heat and high velocity fire gases found in the exhaust portion of a flow path.

The study found that size-up and coordination between suppression and ventilation tactics are essential for an effective firefight because a basement fire is likely to be ventilation controlled.

The organizations expanded upon earlier studies by increasing the size of the basement and addressing basements with no exterior access, with limited exterior access and with an exterior access.
