ORLAND PARK, Ill. — A fire department has joined several other municipalities in a lawsuit against multiple opioid manufacturers.
The Orland Park Fire Protection District and 13 other municipalities in Illinois are suing opioid manufacturers, distributers and three doctors in state court, claiming several issues such as negligence, fraudulent misrepresentation and civil conspiracy, according to Edelson PC, the Chicago-based law firm representing the fire district and other plaintiffs.
At least 20 pharmaceutical companies are being sued in the lawsuit, which claims that the firms’ deceptive marketing led to the current opioid crisis, according to The Village Free Press.
The doctors, Paul Madison, William McMahon and Joseph Giacchino, allegedly ran a “pill mill” at their now defunct pain clinic, prescribing opioids indiscriminately and with no regard for their patients’ tendency towards addiction, according to the Chicago Tribune.
All of the doctors have had their licenses suspended or revoked.
The lawsuit is seeking compensation for expenses accrued as a result of the manufacturers’ and doctors’ actions.
