OAKLAND, Calif. — A firefighter decided to help out the inmate firefighters who have been battling wildfires alongside him by increasing their library selection.
ABC7 reported that Cal Fire seasonal firefighter Patrick Shaw heard inmate crews complaining that they didn’t have many books to choose from, which inspired him to create a book drive called the Prison Fire Project.
Shaw has spent the month of December collecting books for the 43 inmate camps in California, and several businesses have designated themselves as book drop-off sites.
“People have not been bringing stacks, they’ve been bringing boxes,” Black Spring Coffee Company owner Ryan Stark said. “It’s just been really remarkable.”
A benefit concert was also held to raise money for the project, and Shaw plans to personally deliver the books right before the next fire season starts.
