MOSCOW — Eight firefighters were killed while battling an overnight blaze at a warehouse in eastern Moscow, Russia’s Emergency Situations Minister Vladimir Puchkov said Friday.

“For about 13 hours, from last night until this morning, Moscow firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze,” Puchkov said in a statement. Firefighters rescued “more than 100 workers from the burning warehouse.”

An electrical problem is believed to have caused the fire in the 16,000-square-metre warehouse, which stores plastic goods.

A fire at a printing warehouse in Moscow last month killed at least 16 workers trapped inside. The workers were identified in media reports as migrants from Central Asia.
