HALIFAX, Nova Scotia — A firefighter is recovering from his injuries after falling from a ladder on New Year’s Eve.

Firefighters were responding to a call Saturday evening when a firefighter climbed a ladder to reach a victim.

“It was 25 or 30 feet,” Halifax Deputy Chief Roy Hollett said. “To the ground it was about 15 or 20 feet, but there was an opening, it looks like a stairway or walkway, to a door below and he fell to the concrete below.”

The firefighter suffered back injuries and was transferred to the hospital, where he is recovering, reported the Local Xpress.

Officials are investigating the incident.

“Since the Department of Labor is taking the lead on this, I’ll let them [look at] exactly what happened and the procedures, and [make] recommendations … on how we could [handle] these situations in the future without this happening,” Chief Hollett said.

Chief Hollett said the firefighter is expected to recover.
