CHARLTON, Mass. — Members of the Charlton Firefighters Local 4023 have taken a vote of no confidence in Fire Chief Rob Barton, citing concerns about workplace conditions and staff turnover under Barton’s leadership, according to a press release from the union.

According to the Sunday press release, membership accused Barton of creating a hostile work environment, harassment, retaliatory conduct and vindictive behavior.

Barton could not immediately be reached for comment Monday morning. The union did not immediately respond for additional comment on Monday morning.

After Barton assumed leadership 21 months ago, 20 of the department’s 26 firefighters have left, according to the union. The union claims that this turnover represents a “reflection of serious leadership and workplace issues.”

“Our current records indicate that between Dec. 24, 2024 and Oct. 5, 2026, 20 employees of the Charlton Fire Department have separated service from the Town,” Charlton Town Administrator Andrew Golas confirmed to MassLive Monday. “As this is related to an ongoing personnel matter, I have no comment at this time.”

In its statement, the union asks the Charlton Board of Selectmen conduct a review of the accusations and circumstances connected to the turnover in the Charlton Fire Department.

Members of the Charlton Board of Selectmen did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Monday morning.
