SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — The president of San Bernardino’s firefighter union on Monday denounced staffing reductions at nine of the city’s 12 fire stations, saying the budget-cutting move jeopardizes public safety.
“We need four people on every engine and every truck,” President Scott Moss said. “That’s a goal that the city has committed to. But now, in most of the stations we’re down to three. And that doesn’t work.”
Interim City Manager Mark Weinberg said eliminating the eight vacant positions will save the city about $1.2 million a year. Until now, the department has staffed those slots with firefighters working overtime, Weinberg said.
