Former fire union treasurer accused of stealing $75K

He allegedly used his position as treasurer to steal the money between January 2011 and last June

MAYS LANDING, N.J. — A fire lieutenant has been accused of stealing $75,000 from a firefighters’ union while he was treasurer.

Press of Atlantic City reported that Lt. Michael Palmer, with the Margate Fire Department, was charged with official misconduct and theft by failure to make required disposition of property.

Palmer, 36, has been suspended since July of last year, when the prosecutor’s office was told of irregularities in the Margate Fireman’s Mutual Benevolent Association Local 41’s bank accounts.

He allegedly used his position as treasurer to steal the money between January 2011 and last June.

Both charges are second degree and carry a potential sentence of five to 10 years in prison, according to the report.
