NC firefighters asking for $15 hourly pay

Greensboro firefighters currently start at $13 an hour and get 13 hours of overtime a month despite working 56 hours a week

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Firefighters in the city of Greensboro are asking for higher pay for those who do not make $15 an hour, as well as more overtime pay.

WFMY reported that the starting pay is $13 an hour for firefighters, and they only get paid for 13 hours of overtime a month despite working 56 hours a week, according to Professional Firefighters of Greensboro Executive Board Member Nick Loflin.

“Those hours should be valued at the exact same amount as every other hour that every other employee works in the city of Greensboro, because it costs just as much to my family to be away as it does for anybody,” Loflin said.

Councilwoman Sharon Hightower said that since firefighters and police officers received a 7.5 percent raise last year, the city will instead focus on giving other employees a raise instead of increasing the starting pay for firefighters to $15 an hour.

Hightower did, however, add that city officials are aiming to pay all city employees $15 an hour.
