HILO, Hawaii — A Hawaii fire equipment operator died due to a medical emergency while responding to an EMS call Saturday, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

Hawaii Fire Department Equipment Operator Eric Hayashi, 49, suffered an apparent heart attack while on the scene of the call, the USFA reported. Hayashi was immediately taken to the hospital where he later died.

Hayashi was a member of the Hawaii Fire Department for nearly 25 years and was also a driver-engineer, according to the IAFF.

He is survived by his mother, brother, girlfriend and daughter.
