Indianapolis firefighters save one of their own in cardiac arrest

An off-duty firefighter suddenly collapsed during basketball practice with other firefighters

INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis firefighters sprang into action to save a fellow firefighter who suffered cardiac arrest during a basketball practice at the IFD Training Academy.

The Feb. 15 practice was in preparation for the Hoops and Heroes Charity Basketball Game on April 26, an event supporting domestic violence prevention and assistance, WTVR reported.

A firefighter suddenly felt nauseous and collapsed face down, losing consciousness. Eight off-duty firefighters quickly called 911 and assessed their colleague, who was found to have intermittent breathing and a weak pulse.

The firefighters quickly retrieved a nearby AED and followed the device’s instructions to deliver a shock. After administering the shock, they began CPR, performing it for about five minutes until emergency crews arrived.

The firefighter was transported to Methodist Hospital and is reportedly in good condition.
