MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The status of a Memphis firefighter arrested over the weekend on charges stemming from a road-rage shooting remains “pending,” a spokesman said Monday.

Perry Williams, 53, has been charged with five counts of aggravated assault in the shooting on Central Avenue near the Liberty Bowl Saturday night near the end of the University of Memphis football game. He is being held on $250,000 bond.

Williams is a driver for the Memphis Fire Department’s Station 21 on South Mendenhall. He has been with MFD since February 1995, department spokesman Wayne Cooke said.

When asked if Williams had been suspended, Cooke said, “His status is still pending.”

The incident happened about 9 p.m. Saturday, police said. A man, woman and three kids were driving east on Central toward East Parkway when Williams, driving a Chevy Tahoe, cut them off. The man and Williams began arguing, police said. As they neared East Parkway, police said, Williams fired five times, striking the man once in the shoulder. No one else was injured.
