SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — An elderly California woman fired her revolver at firefighters responding to a medical call after she mistook them for home intruders.
The Tribune reported firefighters responded to the home around 2 a.m. Sunday after a personal medical alarm was activated. The firefighters entered the home and found two elderly residents asleep. After speaking with the couple, they determined the activation of the alarm was accidental and started to leave the home.
As they were leaving, firefighters heard a gunshot from inside the house. Shortly afterward, the woman came outside and fired another shot into the air.
Police responded after the shots were fired and found the woman’s daughter had arrived at the home and taken the gun from her mother.
According to the police report, the woman was disoriented after waking up and thought burglars were in the home. She grabbed her gun, accidentally fired a round while she was loading it and then ran outside and fired into the air.
No one was injured in the incident. Prosecutors will decide whether the woman will be charged for negligent discharge of a firearm.
