BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A man was rescued by first responders after his pickup truck left Interstate 459 and plunged about 100 feet, landing upside down near a creek.

The crash happened about 9:06 p.m. Wednesday on I-459 just before Interstate 65. Hoover Fire Capt. Rusty Lowe said the motorist - a man who appeared to be in his 20s - was traveling southbound when his truck left the roadway and dropped in between two bridges.

The truck plummeted and landed upside down. The driver was trapped inside.

Hoover firefighters and police and Rocky Ridge firefighters responded to the scene.

Lowe said firefighters had to rappel to reach the victim. It took about 20 minutes to extricate him from the truck and back up to waiting rescue truck. He was then taken to UAB Hospital.

“I would consider him to have serious injuries but he was alert and talking,’' Lowe said. “Considering what he went through, he appeared to be in pretty good condition.”

The crash remains under investigation.
