CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A retired postal worker and his wife remained hospitalized Sunday after a fire destroyed their mobile home in Clinton Township earlier in the week and killed several pet cats.

The fire broke out about 10 p.m. Thursday in the Silver Springs mobile home park on North Avenue by Elizabeth Road, near the Macomb County Jail, according to the Clinton Township Fire Department.

“We were advised while en route that there were 3 occupants, with 2 of them still inside trapped by flames,” firefighters said in a social media post. “We had a very quick response time and found the structure to be heavily involved in fire. Two unconscious victims were quickly located and rescued from the structure.”

The couple was transported to the burn unit of the intensive care unit of Detroit Receiving Hospital over the weekend. One firefighter sustained a minor injury while rescuing one of the victims.

Katelyn Meininger, who also lived in the home, was able to escape. She said her cats died in the blaze.

She said she works two jobs to “barely cover things” but lost everything in the blaze.

“My dad was taken off the ventilator this morning, but is still in ICU,” she wrote Saturday in a GoFundMe page. “He has been showing some good progress and they’re keeping a very close eye on both him and my mom. They’re still keeping him in ICU though.”

Meininger said her mother had other health issues, including dialysis before the fire.

“It’s going to be an extremely long road for her,” Meininger said.

Her mother is listed in “extremely critical condition” in the hospital, where she has been sedated and placed on a ventilator.

“I’m not sure what the future holds for my mom right now, and I’m very concerned and scared,” she said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to the fire department.

Meininger has established a GoFundMe account to help the family pay for medical bills and find a new home.

As of Sunday afternoon, about 250 had donated approximately $11,600 toward a $100,000 goal. To make a contribution, visit gofund.me/321ed168
