Flames broke out around 9:30 a.m. at the apartment building on Telegraph Road in Middleport. Police Chief John Swick was on patrol when he heard the call go out for a working fire. Once on scene, he was told residents were trapped in Apartment B.

“I was able to kick in the door, but I was met with a wall of black smoke,” Chief Swick said. Both Swick and a Niagara County Sheriff’s deputy Shannon Rodgers rushed to the rear of the home, where a woman had opened an upstairs window.
