D.C. firefighters rescue driver in fiery crash, collapse at daycare

Firefighters rescued a woman trapped inside her burning vehicle after she crashed into a daycare center

WASHINGTON — A car crashed into a commercial building in northeast D.C., sparking a fire and causing part of the building’s front to collapse.

Firefighters arrived at the scene on the 2000 block of Bunker Hill Road NE to find the one-story building engulfed in flames on Dec. 26, WJLA reported.

A woman trapped in the vehicle inside the burning building was rescued by firefighters and transported to a hospital with serious injuries.

“Without the work of these men and women, this woman would not be alive today,” Fire Chief John Donnelly said. “So it’s a bit of a Christmas miracle.”

According to officials, the building houses both an adult daycare center and a childcare center. Nearby establishments include a pediatric dentistry office. No one else was inside the building at the time of the crash, and surrounding businesses remained unaffected.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
