GRAND BAY, Ala. — A 29-year-old Alabama man is in the Mobile County Jail after he hijacked a Jackson County (Miss.) fire truck, threatening a firefighter with a knife after the firefighter offered the man a ride home following an accident.

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Ezell said Wednesday county deputies and fire units responded to a report of a vehicle crash near the intersection of Forts Lake Road and Constitution Road, just west of the Mississippi/Alabama state line.

The truck had gone off the roadway and rolled over. The driver, identified as Jesiah Rain Cady of Grand Bay, Ala., was uninjured a offered a ride into Alabama by a firefighter on the scene. There was only one firefighter in the truck, according to Jackson County Emergency Services Director Earl Etheridge, contrary to other reports.

Once they had crossed into Alabama, Cady threatened the firefighter with the knife. The firefighter stopped the truck and got out, with Cady continuing on in the fire truck.

Not long after, Mobile County sheriff’s deputies spotted the truck, and Cady, at a Grand Bay-area trailer park. Cady was taken into custody without further incident and the truck returned to the Jackson County Fire Department.

Cady is in the Mobile County Jail, charged with first-degree robbery. Other charges could be pending.

The firefighter may have been fortunate to have escaped the incident unharmed. According to multiple media reports, Cady was charged on Oct. 2016 with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and tampering/destroying evidence, in Panama City, Fla.

His address at that time was listed as Old Pascagoula Road in Grand Bay, Ala. No information on the disposition of that case had been located as of press time.
