Prescribed burning season begins in Mendocino

Small number of yearly fall burns reduce hazardous fuels and improve forest health, including wildlife habitat

WILLOWS, CALIF. — Prescribed burns are being planned in the Mendocino National Forest, which includes holdings in Chico as well as the westside.
Wood debris gathered to reduce the amount of wood fuel in forests will be burned. Specific dates have not been released but burning should occur over the next few months.

Piles in Chico Resource Conservation Center in south Chico and the Lake Red Bluff Recreation Area will be burned, plus sites across the Grindstone Ranger District.

The district also plans to conduct prescribed burns on approximately 2,500 acres, including understory burning in Alder Springs, Oak Ridge and Little Stony.

A variety of burns are planned on the west side of the Mendocino Forest.

Piles near selected campgrounds and guard stations, and miscellaneous pile burning will be included.
