Sources: Firefighters trashing shuttered station on video

Fire Chief Kevin O’Connor has ordered an investigation into allegations that firefighters are the ones who did the damage

COLUMBUS, Ohio — As it turns out, there may be video of an unauthorized “kegs and eggs” party at a Downtown Columbus fire station.

City Hall Reporter Lucas Sullivan first reported a couple of weeks ago that more than 100 firefighters — some of them on duty — attended the party at Station 2 at 150 E. Fulton St.

Since the story was published, seven firefighters have told Sullivan that a camera at a nearby business captured video of the party.

Battalion Chief Tracy Smith said she was unaware of the existence of such footage.

Because it plans to demolish Station 2, the city closed the building on June 17 and moved the equipment to a newly opened station on Greenlawn Avenue. Then, in late June, city workers said they found empty alcohol containers at the station and that the property had been vandalized.

Fire Chief Kevin O’Connor has ordered an investigation into allegations that firefighters are the ones who did the damage.

Firefighters who were either there or were aware of the party have said it was organized by some of the firefighters who worked with the station’s third unit.

The party started in the morning and lasted throughout the day. Photos of the festivities were published on Facebook but later taken down.
