MELBA, Idaho — The 3 1/2-year-old Jack Russell terrier, “Baby Dog,” had gone missing Saturday after a walk with its owner, Melissa Tabor of Melba, who was on horseback.

Apparently, it wasn’t unusual for the terrier to linger and catch up later during walks through Tabor’s property. But this time, the dog didn’t show, according to a press release on the rescue sent out Monday.

It wasn’t until Sunday morning that a neighbor of Tabor’s found the dog with its head stuck in the joint connection of a steel pipe. Efforts to loosen the dog proved fruitless — even using vegetable oil as a lubricant — and Tabor eventually took her dog and the section of pipe to WestVet Emergency Hospital in Garden City.

There, even the emergency room team couldn’t remove the dog’s head from the pipe. So the hospital contacted the Boise Fire Department. With the help of WestVet staff, firefighters moved the sedated dog outside and cut the pipe off.

Baby Dog was returned to its family today and is now doing fine — just in need of a bath, according to the release.
