HIBBING, Minn. — Two children, ages 2 and 5, escaped injury Tuesday when an apartment caught fire while they were left home alone, authorities said.

The Hibbing Fire Department reported that crews were called to a three-story apartment building in the 2300 block of Fourth Avenue East at about 5 p.m. after the children went to a neighbor and said their apartment was on fire. Firefighters found smoke coming from the apartment and the fire contained to the kitchen. The fire was quickly extinguished, with damage estimated at $15,000. No one was injured.

The children said they were left home while their mother was at work, fire officials said. The older child said some papers caught fire on the stove; the cause of the fire remains under investigation but “appears to be the result of unattended children,” according to a fire department news release.
