PERTH, Australia — An Australian firefighter continues to fight for her life after being severely burned when her truck was engulfed by a wildfire.
The 45-year-old firefighter suffered burns over 60 percent of her body after she became trapped in her truck that was overrun with flames, according to ABC Australia.
She remains in critical condition.
A 24-year-old firefighter who was also in the apparatus was burned on 40 percent of her body, but has been removed from the intensive care unit and is now in stable condition.
The pair was fighting a wildfire when it is believed that a wind change put them in the path of the blaze.
Albany Emergency Management Coordinator Brian Pickford said that the women had all the available protective gear and that “there was nothing that could have protected the two women.”
“Their tankers are also very heavily protected but sometimes the intensity of the heat can truly overcome the safety equipment we provide them,” Pickford said.
He told ABC Australia that the fire was just too much and that the firefighters were “caught in an extreme and very hot fire area.”
Investigators are looking into the cause of the 3,700-acre fire, and other crews are currently trying to extinguish it.
