LISBON, Portugal — Wildfires raging in northern Portugal injured two people and destroyed four fire engines, civil protection authorities said Monday.
A woman sustained serious burns while a firefighter was treated for inhaling smoke in the Viseu district.
The fire engines were destroyed when flames surrounded firefighters in the Guarda district.
Authorities had deployed 6,181 firefighters to battle 269 wildfires burning as of Sunday, the Publico newspaper reported.
Twenty-six municipalities were at maximum risk of fires due to high temperatures, according to the meteorological institute IPMA.
Wildfires also erupted in neighbouring Spain, where they devastated 200 hectares of forest and bush in the north-western region of Galicia.
