LEBANON, N.H. —Lebanon High School students were released early Tuesday after firefighters responded to a fire in the boy’s bathroom on the second floor.
Police Lt. Phil Roberts said arson is suspected in a criminal investigation of the incident and suspects are being investigated.
Firefighters responded to the high school at 1:25 p.m. after the bathroom fire set off smoke detectors in the school.
“The fire alarm panel showed smoke detector activation on the second floor in the location of the boy’s restroom.
Upon further investigation, the first arriving crew found a sprinkler head had activated on the second floor in the boy’s restroom,” the Lebanon Fire Department said in a press release.
“The sprinkler system had extinguished a small fire in one of the bathroom stalls.”
The small fire caused significant water damage to both the first and second floors of the high school, the fire department said.
Firefighters evacuated the smoke from the second floor and assisted in the cleanup from the water damage, which includes ceiling tiles, carpeting, computers and other electronic devices in the school.
Due to the fire, part of the building’s power had to be shut off, so school officials released students early for the day.
The Lebanon High School administration is in the process of conducting a damage assessment, the fire department said.
