COVENTRY, R.I. — A Coventry firefighter is recovering after being impaled by a shard of glass while caught in a collapse during a house fire.
Central Coventry Fire District Acting Lieutenant Scott Brown was with other firefighters fighting a house fire on May 26 when the ceiling on the second floor collapsed on him, WPRI reported.
Central Coventry Fire Captain Jim Almagno said Brown was knocked down but got back up, checked himself and then went back to work.
“His adrenaline was pumping,” Almagno said. “He kept trying to work but noticed his arm gave out.”
Coventry Fire Chief Frank Brown said it appeared that a shard of glass “impaled” Scott’s arm. Scott was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for surgery to remove the glass. Doctors believe he may have suffered significant nerve damage.
Chief Brown said Scott has a long road to recovery ahead of him. An image of Scott being cared for by firefighters was shared on social media. Brown said that when he first saw the photo it brought a tear to his eye.
“When we come to work, we don’t know how the day is going to go,” he said. “That picture shows the brotherhood in this job. We will do whatever it takes to be there for each other.”
