MIDWEST CITY, Okla. — Fire officials are urging the public to not leave water bottles in their vehicles.
KFOR reported that the Midwest Fire Department tested how hot water bottles can get if left inside a vehicle. They found the sunlight reached 250 degrees when magnified through a bottle of water.
“The sunlight will come through, when it’s filled with liquid, and act as a magnifying glass as you would with regular optics,” firefighter David Richardson said. “It uses the liquid and the clear material to develop a focused beam and sure enough, it can actually cause a fire, a combustion.”
The heat can potentially set the interior materials of a vehicle on fire, such as fabric seats and mats.
