2 children, 2 firefighters, neighbor injured in house fire

One neighbor, a nurse, revived the toddler via CPR when he was rescued from the fire

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. — A house fire left two children and three adults injured Tuesday, two of which are firefighters.

WYFF4 reported that a toddler remains in critical condition; the boy’s 6-year-old sister is in stable condition.

The two firefighters were hospitalized for heat exhaustion, as well as a neighbor who tried to help battle the fire.

“Somebody hollered there was a kid in there,” Cliff Northum, a neighbor, said. “Two or three guys went in, couldn’t find the kid.”

The baby’s father was searching for their dog in the neighborhood when the fire broke out. The 6-year-old was able to escape the fire.

Another neighbor, Donna Kerns, said once the father returned he found the baby and brought him out of the fire. “The baby was not breathing, was unconscious, nothing.”

One neighbor, a nurse, performed CPR on the baby after he was pulled from the fire and was able to revive him.

Firefighters from six different departments responded to the fire.

Santee Circle Volunteer Fire Chief Robert Winn said state officials will investigate the fire, which destroyed the house.
