WOODBRIDGE, Ill. — Two people were killed when the driver of an electric vehicle crashed into an Illinois home, police say.

Speed is believed to have been a factor in the Sunday, March 2, crash involving a Tesla in Woodridge , a southwestern suburb of Chicago, WGN reported.

The Tesla driver left the road and struck a home, causing the vehicle to ignite in flames, the Woodridge Police Department said. Photos from the Lisle-Woodridge Fire District show the fiery aftermath.

“As soon as I heard a loud bang, I saw the vehicle go right into the house,” John Klecyngier, a neighbor, told WFLD. “As soon as I saw that, I saw the flames, I heard the screaming. I pulled the video off my cameras and sure enough, it’s the car going at an extremely high rate of speed.”

Firefighters prevented the fire from extending into the home, officials said. It took about 20 minutes to get the blaze under control.

Police said both people in the car — the driver and a passenger — were pronounced dead at the scene. They have not been publicly identified as of March 3.

No one inside the home was injured, police said.
