She spent about 15 hours painting the living room mural that was inspired by her husband’s retirement

ELYRIA, Ohio — Shannon Haas paid tribute to her retiring Lorain firefighter husband and firefighters in general by painting a mural on the wall of the living room of their North Abbe Road home.

“I kept thinking I’d like to do something that demonstrates the heart of the firefighting,” Haas said Wednesday. “I wanted to make sure that his service and the service of firefighters in general had more of an element that people could take personally.”

The approximately 7-foot by 9-foot mural depicts Bob Haas in turnout gear kneeling. Behind him is the fire truck he drives responding to a burning building. The mural also includes “A Fireman’s Prayer,” believed to have been written in 1947 by Wichita, Kan., firefighter William “Smokey” Linn after he was unable to save children trapped in a fire. The prayer asks for strength to save lives.
