ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. — A firefighter for the Orchard Farm Fire Protection District died Tuesday night of injuries sustained in an ATV accident Saturday, authorities said.
Thomas R. Schmid, 26, had volunteered for the department about five years, said Fire Chief Jeremey Hollrah.
St. Charles County police said the single-vehicle accident took place about 10:30 p.m. Saturday on Portage Road near Portage des Sioux. Police said Schmid lost control of his westbound ATV and was thrown from the vehicle.
Hollrah said the incident wasn’t related to Schmid’s firefighting duties.
Hollrah said Schmid, who lived in an unincorporated area of the county, previously had been a volunteer with the neighboring Rivers Pointe Fire Protection District. The chief said Schmid died at St. Joseph Hospital in St. Charles.
The Orchard Farm district serves a largely rural 46-square-mile swath of the county north of St. Charles.
