MONTPELIER, Vt. — A large fire in Montpelier destroyed a nearby lumberyard, according to officials.

The fire was reported on Nov. 1 shortly before 7 p.m. at the RK Miles lumberyard, NECN reported.

Montpelier Deputy Fire Chief James Quinn told vtdigger that the initial fire engine to arrive at the scene was consumed by the flames.

The first firefighters encountered a “massive amount of fire already spreading throughout the lumberyard,” Quinn said, adding that “as they were trying to extricate some people, the fire kind of overwhelmed them and they had to get out.”

There were no injuries reported.

In a Facebook post, Montpelier Mayor Jack McCullough stated that while the lumberyard suffered destruction, the main store remained largely undamaged. Firefighters saved the nearby Clothespin Factory and Hunger Mountain Co-op.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
