Faced with near-zero visibility, Portland firefighters entered the burning house twice, rescuing both occupants and escaping uninjured

PORTLAND, Maine — A blaze in Portland severely damaged a home and sent its two adult occupants to the hospital, officials said.

On Aug. 1, firefighters pulled one occupant from the home and took them to a nearby hospital, then rescued a second person moments later and transported them as well, according to WMTW.

In a Facebook post titled “Risk a lot to save a lot,” the Portland Fire Department shared photos of a damaged helmet and facepiece by the Aug. 1 two-alarm blaze on Broadway in Riverton. Crews battled heavy fire, extreme heat and near-zero visibility while repeatedly re-entering the house to rescue one occupant and search for another.

Despite the gear damage and a momentary equipment failure, no firefighters were injured, and both residents were transported to the hospital.
