HAYFORK, Calif. —A fire that broke out just after noon Wednesday has been spreading steadily, and prompted evacuations Thursday afternoon.
The Stafford Fire burning southeast of Hayfork in Trinity County was up to 1,200 acres as of Thursday evening. It was 15 percent contained, primarily on the south side.
Just 218 people had been assigned to the fire as of 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
They were protecting structures in Hayfork and building firelines to keep the blaze away from the community.
