NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A daring rescue helped save a mother and her three year-old son.

The firefighter didn’t think twice about running up into a burning building in New Haven after hearing a women yelling for help. “It was a lot of smoke, a lot of fire,” said Della Bell of New Haven. “It was crazy.” The fire started in the basement of 238 West Hazel St. The first fire fighters arrived on scene and said the house was consumed by dark thick smoke. Lt Teo Baldwin saw the woman upstairs, who was trapped with her 3-year-old son.

“We noticed her in the window screaming for help,” Baldwin said. Firefighters put a ladder up to the second floor to rescue the mother and her son, but Baldwin ran in through the front door. “It’s pitch black totally filled with smoke, so I scream out for her, ‘Where are you?’” Baldwin said. “She says ‘I’m over here.’ I got to her, she had the baby.”
