Firefighter shot while battling fire

Standing outside a burning mobile home, a firefighter was accidentally shot by a rifle

NIXIA, Mo. — State investigators are still working to determine the cause of a fire that killed one and injured a firefighter after a rifle was accidentally shot.

Fire crews were called to a fully-involved mobile home fire where neighbors said the residents were likely still inside, according to the News Leader.

Within half an hour, firefighters had the blaze under control. While fighting the flames, a firefighter was inexplicably shot by a rifle in his upper thigh while outside the mobile home, Firefighterclosecalls.com reported.

After surveying the scene, the report said that a rifle with a missing round was found in the burning mobile home and concluded that the heat from the fire caused the rifle to fire and hit the firefighter.

The firefighter was taken to the hospital and was released with stitches. A body found in the mobile home has not been identified.
