Firefighters stumble upon pot-growing operation

Firefighters found about 300 marijuana plants while battling a house fire

The Daily News of Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES — A fire at a North Hills home early Saturday has prompted an investigation into what may be a marijuana-growing operation.

It took 30 Los Angeles firefighters 16 minutes to extinguish the blaze at the one-story home in the 9100 block of Monogram Avenue, said LAFD spokesman Brian Humphrey.

No injuries were reported, but Los Angeles police were called in because firefighters discovered more than 300 marijuana plants as well as an interior irrigation system inside the home to cultivate plants, officials said.

At least one man was arrested on suspicion of the sale of marijuana, said LAPD Sgt. Humberto Najera.

The cause of the small blaze was electrical, according to a joint investigation carried on by the LAPD and the LAFD.

“Right now the place is being locked down, and we’re attempting to get a search warrant to recover the remaining evidence,” Najera said.
