Mayday: 3 Mass. firefighters trapped in house fire, rescued

They were trying to get down the stairs when they ran out of air; two firefighters from another department rescued them

SAUGUS, Mass. — Three firefighters were pulled safely out of a massive three-alarm house fire Wednesday morning.

CBS Boston reported that firefighters from several towns were called to a house fire just before 5 a.m. and found it engulfed in flames. A family of three was inside as the fire started, but they escaped safely.

Saugus (Mass.) Fire Chief Michael Newbury said three of his firefighters were trapped inside.

“The firefighters that went upstairs were overwhelmed by the fire and heat,” he said. “They were trying to get their way down the stairs and in that time frame they were working so hard they ran out of air.”

That’s when they called in a mayday.

“A fire lieutenant and a firefighter were able to extricate three of our firefighters from the building and they were all out safely,” Chief Newbury said. “I would say the firefighters on scene definitely saved the lives of my men.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
