Mayday at Chicago-area fire; 4 firefighters injured

The call was prompted by a firefighter who ran out of air on the third floor; all firefighters suffered non-life threatening injuries

RIVERDALE, Ill. — Four firefighters were injured battling an extra-alarm fire at a condominium building Tuesday.

Chicago Tribune reported that about 100 firefighters from multiple departments responded to the fire in the three-story building. Riverdale Fire Department Deputy Chief Art Schweitzer said he doesn’t know how the firefighters were hurt, but said they’ll be OK, according to the report.

The injured firefighters were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. One civilian also complained of difficulty of breathing due to asthma.

Chief Schweitzer said there was a mayday call prompted by a firefighter who ran out of air on the third floor, according to the report.

It’s unclear where the fire started and the cause remains under investigation. Fire officials said the blaze was put out in 45 minutes.
