LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Fire swept through a three-story apartment building in the city’s Old Louisville neighborhood Thursday, killing two people, injuring four others inside and briefly trapping a firefighter, the city’s fire chief said.

A ground-floor resident said he awoke to screams coming from the second floor as the fire spread. One or two people leaped from the second floor to escape the blaze, and a first-floor occupant broke out a window to flee, authorities said.

Firefighters rescued a couple of residents, Louisville fire Chief Greg Frederick said. Later, displaced residents stood in light rain as firefighters tended to the badly damaged brick building.
