COCKE COUNTY, Tenn. — Officials are investigating the cause of a fire that heavily damaged a Cocke County motel overnight.
Fire crews were called about 11:30 p.m. Thursday to the Parkway Inn, 766 Cosby Highway, in Newport on a report of flames coming through the roof of at least three guest rooms, Newport Fire Department Battalion Chief Tim Pack said.
The blaze quickly spread, engulfing 10 rooms and collapsing a portion of the roof, he said.
All of the motel’s occupants escaped safely, according to Pack, although no estimates were available on the number of people inside at the time of the fire.
One Newport firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion at a local hospital and later released.
Fire crews remained at the scene to monitor for hot spots Friday morning.
More details as they develop online and in Saturday’s News Sentinel.
