LEWISVILLE, Texas — A cell phone video captured firefighters rescuing a woman who was trapped in an apartment blaze.
FOX4 News reported that firefighters were aware when they arrived that the woman was trapped on the second floor, where the worst part of the flames were, because she was on the phone with 911.
Firefighters said they were forced to pull the woman through a window because the flames were so strong.
“It’s a rarity it actually happens,” Lewisville Fire Battalion Chief David Pennington said. “We do the practice so that when it does happen we’re ready for that game day.”
Firefighter Coleton Spann and Captain Brian Staton were the first firefighters to scale the ladder to reach the woman.
“I went head first through the window,” Spann said. “My first reaction was just kind of gathering my thoughts. This is what I need to do. I don’t know the layout of the room. I don’t know what’s in the room. I don’t know where furniture is or if she’s even in there for sure.”
The woman was found unconscious in the corner of a room, and a team of firefighters was waiting outside the window to put her on a stretcher.
“Every second that goes by, it’s affecting her outcome long term,” Spann said. “We made contact and moved as fast we could.”
The woman is currently in a medically-induced coma. The firefighters are hoping she will make a full recovery.
“We pray for her and hope she recovers,” Spann said. “We’d love to see her one day if that’s the case.”
Staton was also injured in the fire, but he has since returned home and is recovering.
