Firefighters want to bill arsonists, negligent drivers

Under the ordinance, the fire department can charge $435 per car accident or $6,000 for a hazardous materials response

HOLLISTER, Calif. — The Hollister Fire Department wants to begin billing people whose negligent behavior leads to an emergency.

The City Council approved a new ordinance Monday night that will allow the fire department to bill a person’s insurance company for any costs associated with an emergency response.

“We’re not going to try to collect from anybody on a medical call or the services that we normally provide, so, this is a no-brainer really,” Interim Fire Chief Bill Garringer said. Instead, the fire department wants to go after drunk drivers, arsonists, or bad drivers, for example.
