LEHIGH, Iowa — The Lehigh fire chief has reached day 23 of his hunger strike on Tuesday.

Kirk Kelley is trying to raise money for his department to get a new fire station. “After trying all sorts of fundraisers and coming up way short, I have decided to take drastic measures and became the fire department Gandhi by going on a HUNGER STRIKE,” said Kelley.

He said he won’t eat until they raise the money for the new station. “My body keeps telling me, ‘Why do you keep doing it?’” said Kelley. It’s been nearly a month of two protein shakes a day and an occasional cup of fruit juice or bowl of chicken broth.
