QUINCY, Mass. — The National Fire Protection Association released its 2015 findings of the fire service’s needs and challenges Thursday.

The report based its findings off of a survey intended to capture the level of fire department resources and staffing to identify potential gaps.

Particular areas that were addressed in the report included personnel and their capabilities, facilities and apparatus, PPE, fire prevention and communication and technology. The report revealed that while some fire service needs have been declining, many have remained constant or increased.

The report found that the greatest need for training in larger departments protecting populations greater than 500,000 is in fire prevention and code enforcement.

In regards to training, 49 percent of fire departments have not formally trained their personnel who are involved in structural fire responses.

The number of departments who reported their SCBA equipment was at least 10 years old increased from 55 percent in 2010 to 69 percent. Similarly, 72 percent of departments also reported that their PPE was at least 10 years old.

The report stated that 43 percent of fire stations are at least 40 years old, compared to 32 percent in 2001. The number of departments with engines and pumpers at least 15 years old decreased from 51 percent to 43. Lastly, the report found that only one quarter of departments offer a basic firefighter health and fitness program.
