WEST COVINA, Calif. — The City Council will consider approving an 8.5 percent raise for the police and fire chiefs at Tuesday’s council meeting at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 1444 W. Garvey Ave.

According to the staff report, the city performed a compensation survey of eight surrounding fire agencies and 12 surrounding police agencies to determine an appropriate salary range for its chiefs.

The survey showed that the compensation for both public safety leaders is far below that of other agencies, according to the report.

The difference in salary between the chiefs and each of their subordinates ranges from between 1.3 and 2 percent. Typically, the difference between chief and the next level position in the department should be between 15 and 20 percent, according to the report.

An approval would increase their salaries by 8.5 percent.

Police Chief Frank Wills’ current salary is $179,184. Fire Chief Paul Segalla earns $157,752.

The cost increases have been factored into the adopted 2012-13 fiscal year budget, according to the staff report.
