WICKLIFFE, Ohio — Wickliffe City Council is considering an ordinance that would make 65 the mandatory retirement age for members of the police and fire departments.
The ordinance is patterned after similar ones passed in Mentor and Cleveland.
Under the proposed ordinance, members of the departments who are over the age of 65 may submit a written letter asking to continue working, but cannot work past the age of 70. The Wickliffe Police Department currently has two officers of the age of 65. “Each member shall be retired honorably with such pension rights as may be provided by law and by the rules of the Police and Firemen’s Pension Funds,” the ordinance reads.
