County forgives Ky. fire department’s deficit

Officials said the fire department has worked hard the past year reducing a deficit of more than $10,000

ISLAND, Ky. — The Southeastern Volunteer Fire Department’s deficit of more than $10,000 was erased last week by the McLean County Fiscal Court.

On the recommendation of Judge-Executive Kelly Thurman, the Fiscal Court voted 4-1 during its May 19 meeting to forgive the Island-based fire department’s $11,113 deficit. Thurman said the fire department has worked hard the past year reducing what was $20,567.97 in July 2014.

“I just felt like it was time to remove that so-called monkey on the back that has gripped them for so long,” Thurman said. “They have made great strides with the work they’ve done in the last six to eight months to improve participation, improve service and improve the ISO rating. They’ve come a long way in a short amount of time.”
