Missing firefighter’s body found in La. canal

Firefighter Jacob Lewis had been missing for more than three weeks

BATON ROUGE, Ill. Rescue workers from several agencies on Thursday recovered the body of missing Baton Rouge firefighter Jacob Lewis about 2 miles from where he was last seen by his wife more than three weeks ago at the Belle River boat launch on the Intracoastal Canal.

Adam Einck, spokesman for the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, which coordinated the search with the St. Martin Parish and Assumption Parish sheriff’s offices, confirmed Lewis’ body had been found. Assumption Sheriff Mike Waguespack said his office received a call at about noon Thursday from a worker at Settoon Dock Services, which is about 2 miles down river from where Lewis disappeared on Jan. 30, regarding a body floating in the canal.

Waguespack said about 90 minutes later, officials from Wildlife and Fisheries, the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office and the St. Martin Parish Coroner’s Office pulled Lewis’ body from the Intracoastal Canal, near the town of Belle River.Lewis was identified based on the driver’s license found on the body and the clothing description from his wife, Jennifer Branch Lewis, the sheriff said. Waguespack also said there were no obvious wounds or trauma to Lewis’ body.
